After spending July 4th weekend in Chicago, we returned to find a mess in the sunroom. There were sunflower seeds all over the floor, and there was a hole in the bottom the bag of sunflower seeds.
Upon closer inspection, we realized that squirrels had broken into the sunroom while we were gone! They tore a hole in the screen window and used the hole to get into the sunroom and eat all the sunflowers seeds they wanted. The squirrels have given up on begging us for food and resorted to thievery!

Last summery we set a small platform outside a window and put sunflower seeds on it. We hoped to attract squirrels so we could watch them up close. To reach the platform, the squirrels have to run across a 6 foot wooden rod which connects the platform to the trees. We weren’t sure if they would figure it out. Well, it only took two days. I think they might follow the birds, because when we set up the platform, the birds spotted it first and started congregating on it and around it in the trees. Not much later the first squirrel appeared. I wonder if some really smart squirrels figured out that the easiest way to find food is to let the birds find it, then go over to where they are, scare them all away, and take the food. Anyway, now the squirrels have learned a new trick. When there is no food on the platform, they wait on the platform until we enter the room on the other side of the window. Then they stand up really tall against the glass and stare at us. They keep on doing this until we relent and give them food. I feel like we are being blackmailed by squirrels.
A squirrel demanding food from us. Despite being 6 inches tall, they can really project authority.
His persistence paid off- we eventually gave him food.

We are working in our sunroom on the second floor with the trees right outside of the windows. While working, we watched lots of squirrels and birds in the trees. We came up with an idea to build a platform outside our window and put food on it, so we could see the squirrels and birds close up. We put up the platform a few weeks ago, and we’ve gotten lots of squirrels, chipmunks, and birds. The chipmunks are really funny because they stuff their cheeks full of food.
We have named a few of the squirrels:
Adam the Squirrel
Rocky the Squirrel
Mario the Squirrel
Casper the Squirrel
This is the squirrel platform Cassie and I made outside our window
Our apartment is on the second story, so we had to get creative
This is one of our chipmunks. He comes, fills his cheeks until they are bigger than the rest of his head, and then takes off.
His cheeks are getting bigger 🙂
This is the showdown between the chipmunk and the squirrel. The chipmunk was already on the platform when the squirrel decided he was hungry too
As you can see, the chipmunk was victorious
Whats going on in there?
